One important aspect of a railroad spill collection system is the overall width of the system to insure that any accidental spills, leakage, overfills of tank cars, locomotive fuel tanks, etc... are contained. It is Century's experience that in most cases a 12' wide system is necessary to insure that accidental spills from the top of railroad tank cars or from locomotive fuel tanks are captured.
In most cases, the average tank car maximum diameter ranges from 9'8” to 10'2”. During transloading operations of railroad tank cars from the top of the tank car, it is important to contain spills that migrate off of the top and drip vertically at the outer most radius. One should also take into consideration

that tank cars have ladders, grated walk areas and other equipment may cause the liquids to splash or migrate a greater distance away from the edge of the tank car. With this in mind, it is important to insure that the width of your field pan will catch these accidental spills.
